This marathon had particuar importance as I overcame injury and sitting in the medic tent for more than an hour and 20 minutes. My cocahes are running me in, and even shot some video for me!

Thanks!

Enjoy!
Team in Training is more than just training your body for a marathon or Triathlon. It's about raising money for two very important cause: Cancer research and cancer patient services. I've been very fortunate to have run most of my events through this. A lot of my friends and coworkers have asked me why I stay connected through Team in Training and I tell them because it makes me feel good to raise money for a very important cause. Plus I run with great people, travel to fun marathons and beyond that I know that I'm feeling every bit as good on the inside as I do on the outside. And that's maybe just as important to me. I also wanted to take a minute before I dive into my actual post to thank all of my donors thus far and let you know if you want to donate Donate to Team in Training and help find a cure for cancer:

Diane Nguyen
Julie Diffenbach
angela simoncini
Mary Barber
Caryn Regen
Michael Lazar
Christine Shurts
Aja Albiar
Matthew Fogarty
Michael Beckley
Jennifer Colarusso
Jennifer McCarthy
Leah Logan

The first practice is always something to look forward to. From meeting(some or all of) my mentees it's always great to get back out there with my coaches and a support group that keeps you motivated to run.

Coach Steve

I'm really fortunate this season as I get to run with my coworker Angie T. Angie is a great person and I'm very excited to be able to be her "mentor" and watch her turn into a marathon runner. She's been to a couple of the preseason practices and yesterday was her first official Team in Training practice. She was glowing after about the people and coaches. I couldn't agree more. They are a part of the reason why I keep coming back. The coaching is fantastic and the people are all like minded so for me it's really embracing to have people that really understand each other.

Here's a picture of two of my mentees Angie and Helena:

Angie on the left and Helena on the right.

We did a nice 30 minute run to start the season running from Central Park on the east side 90th street entrance running up to 102nd street and cutting over and back down on the westside about 15 blocks then turning around and running back up the westside and back over to east 90th street entrance. A nice run, I wasn't winded at all and talked to Angie the entire time. Angie made the comment that "talking while running actually makes the time (and mileage) go by faster" I couldn't agree more.

The Team running

When we get back from our run we have a period where we stretch. We always stretch after the run. I know this sounds odd, but we don't stretch before. The coaches have said that stretching when your body is cold doesn't help, which before I joined I never knew or thought about. So we always do our stretches after.

Run as a Team stretch as a Team

It was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to this season! I hope you all lace up your shoes and get out for a run!

Happy Running!

The first practice of the new season was informally here today. It wasn't a full practice and a few weeks from when the actual training season starts. It was still good to see many of the coaches I've come to know well over the past two years. These are the gentleman and ladies who know all about my running history and are fantastic people. Just doing the short 1.75 mile loop tonight got me excited to really commit to an injury free, weight loss filled, complete marathon training four months. I am very excited to see where I shake out come January. It's going to be exciting, frustrating and fun. I know I already have the fire back that I've felt I've missed the past season or so.

I feel fresh. I feel there's enough angry fire to fuel me during those days I don't want to do it, and enough joy to just enjoy the time spent in training.

It will be a good season. If you are at all interested in helping me raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to eliminate blood cancers feel free to donate at my donation web page located at http://www.scottiwatarunning.com

I would love your support.

Happy Runnng!

PS Thanks Diane N for your donation last night! Much appreciated!

Running as you may have guessed is a big part of my life. Has become the thing I do to find myself, to feel things, the time to think and be by myself while still being with some amazing people. But something that anyone who has known me in real life is my desire for good mentorship. Since college I've always believed in the virtues a good mentor can do. In what I call my Scott 1.0 life I used to mentor many up and coming PR students. Helped them prepare speeches, edit releases, critique nonverbal communication. All things I felt were important and still do.

Running is no different. People are scared to start running. They are afraid because a marathon is a daunting task and 26.2 is a daunting number. I always start by telling my mentees: "Look at me, (pause) no seriously look at me,". I don't look like what a "runner" looks like and I'm ok with that. The second thing I tell my mentees is "I am every bit as scared as you are, but here's what I know, we will accomplish this feat, and we will do it together," this is also very true. I get nervous before every run, not just races, but practice runs. It's how I jump start myself. I love the energy my mentees bring and it holds me responsible on those Saturday mornings I don't want to get up. Those Friday nights you sacrifice a personal life to go to bed by 9 because you have a 4 hour run the next morning and you can't be hungover. See even being a "mentor" I still learn a lot from my mentees. I'm excited for this upcoming season to share with them and to learn from them. Running is about dedication, about putting your body through a tough go, but like life every tough go has its infinite rewards

Running needs good mentors. Running needs good mentees. Just like life.

Happy running.
